This past week the oldest casino in Downtown Las Vegas, Golden Gate Hotel and Casino, celebrated their 116th birthday!
Fun Facts About The ‘Golden’ Property
The property opened January 13, 1906 as Hotel Nevada on land purchased for $1,750. Room and board was just $1 per day at the time. Hotel Nevada would install Las Vegas’ first telephone a year later.
The hotel changed with the times, adding its first outdoor electric sign in 1927 and expanding in 1931, when it was renamed Sal Sagev. In 1955, a group of men from San Francisco subleased the ground floor of the Sal Sagev and opened the Golden Gate Casino. Perhaps most famously, the property introduced the San Francisco-inspired Original Shrimp Cocktail in 1959.
In 1974, the entire property was rebranded as the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino and remains a favorite among locals and tourists alike.
