The Secret Life of Sundial, a Cool Cat Living in Las Vegas

Check out one of Las Vegas' up-and-coming fur-tastic influencers

By Melinda Sheckells

When he’s not stretching on Cattelan carpets, Sundial, a spotted Oriental Shorthair with bottomless energy, muses on lost airport loves,  the boldness of Mountain Lions, the multi-pronged help his favorite local charity gives his colleagues. And that elusive Emerald Fennell short film.

Clothes or nah? Accessories-only. Preferably vintage Ugo Correani collars.

On your way to a social media celebrity? I’m depleted by the vagaries of Instagram’s algorithms. So I’ll just analog wing it or word-or-mouth-it at this point. Jesus had between 12 and 600 followers, according to historical fluctuations, so I’ll be okay.

Favorite treat? Occasionally, some Lactose free Green Valley Creamery Kefir. And the purified water that my person has on a fountain rotation for me.

Where are you from?

I’m still young, but I’ve already moved from my motherland of Europe to New York City and finally, to my permanent person in Las Vegas.

What’s the story behind your name?

I’d like to think that I was named Sundial after its esoteric original meaning of time told by the sun’s position in the sky. But my human was also mildly fixated (it’s over now) with Sundial Growers (the Canadian cannabis stock) for a minute, circa the time of our meeting. So the genesis might be a 50/50.

Single and ready to mingle?

I’m still crushed by a furtive kennel-to-kennel flirtation with my shorthaired beauty Rosa, during a Detroit airport layover on my way to Las Vegas. Now I’m taking bebé steps towards sentimental recovery.

Biggest pet peeve?

The lack of outdoor facilities/activities for cats (only Mountain Lions seem to have taken matters into their own paws). And not being able to stream, “Careful How You Go” Emerald Fennell’s 2017 debut short film.

Favorite animal charity?

Locally, Heaven Can Wait Animal Society. I like their multi-tiered approach: from affordable services to those in need of pet assistance to finding loving homes for my colleagues.
