Juneteenth is a national holiday. Let’s celebrate!

Juneteenth Becomes a National Holiday

🎉  🎉 🎉  This week all the national news networks aired President Biden signing legislation to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. In his announcement, he said, “We can’t rest until the promise of equality is fulfilled for every one of us in every corner of this nation. That, to me, is the meaning of Juneteenth.”

Vice President Harris gave a speech commemorating this historical moment and expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed in making this bill pass. “Throughout history Juneteenth has been known by many names: Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, Liberation Day, Emancipation Day and today, a national holiday,” said Vice President Harris. “We must learn from our history.”

Here in Las Vegas, according to KTNV Las Vegas, celebrations for Juneteenth this weekend will be taking place at the DISCOVERY Children’s Museum with a flag-raising ceremony, a poetry reading by Poet Laureate of Clark County (2017-2019) Vogue Robinson and a children’s art workshop (the first 250 kids are free because of the NV Energy Foundation); Water Street Plaza in Henderson will host the Juneteenth Jazz Legacy and Heritage Festival 2021 with live performances and educational workshops and the Las Vegas Juneteenth Festival will be at Kianga Isoke Palacio Park featuring local entertainers, community speakers, workshops and more.

Plus, The LGBTQ+ Center will be honoring the holiday by hosting Juneteenth Pride Celebration with local artists and local businesses celebrating the intersection of the Black and LGBTQ+ communities.
