Curaleaf is throwing its support behind the battle to eradicate childhood cancer. The cannabis dispensary network’s three Nevada locations are collecting $1, $3 and $5 donations from in-store and online sales through the end of February to benefit the Tyler Robinson Foundation, which provides much-needed support to victims of pediatric cancer and their families. The initiative is inspired by World Cancer Day, which took place on Feb. 4.
The cause resonates deeply with Curaleaf, a company that’s long championed the benefits of THC and CBD for those coping with cancer and other life-changing medical conditions. To offer further support this month, Curaleaf is offering discounts on RSO-brand products to assist those who value cannabis for medicinal purposes.
Imagining a Brighter Future
The Tyler Robinson Foundation has strong ties to the local community. The nonprofit was founded in 2014 by Las Vegas’ own Imagine Dragons, who were inspired by the story of Tyler Robinson, a teenage fan of the chart-topping rock band. Robinson passed away from a rare form of cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), but the positivity and optimism he displayed throughout the struggle remain the foundation for the mission of the organization that bears his name.
Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has shifted time, attention and resources away from the continuing effort to eliminate childhood cancer. An estimated 16,000 children continue to be diagnosed each year, while families face medical costs that total an astounding $833,000 per patient on average.
TRF services include financial relief for family expenses, assistance covering hotel and travel during treatment, family fun grants to celebrate birthdays and other special occasions, and, in the most heartbreaking situation, money to cover the cost of a funeral and burial.
TRF has shown incredible progress in raising much-needed funds over the years. Yet those efforts took a major hit with the postponement of the organization’s annual fundraising gala last year due to safety concerns connected to the coronavirus pandemic. The decision wasn’t made lightly. The previous gala in 2019 raised $3 million, an increase of 700% since the event debuted six years earlier.
