Pauly Shore’s New Stand-Up Act Takes Us Behind the Curtain

Meet the Humans of Downtown: stories and snapshots from the urban core of Las Vegas

During his ubiquitous reign in the 90s, comedian and recent Downtown Las Vegas transplant Pauly Shore was inescapable. “The Weasel” was a fixture on MTV and in Hollywood. But his story begins long before “Bio-Dome,” at the famed The Comedy Store in LA. Run by his mother, Mitzi. The Comedy Store gave young Pauly a front row seat to history, where he’d watch legends like George Carlin, Robin Williams and Richard Pryor perform.

Pauly pulls those memories from his youth and his rise to fame for his one-man act, “Stick With the Dancing: Stories from my Childhood,” which he brings to Wiseguys Comedy Las Vegas on March 28 and 29 and April 11 and 12.

“Stick with the Dancing” is not a traditional standup act. He describes it as being in the vein of Mike Tyson’s “Undisputed Truth”: a raw and candid look at his life, career and ups and downs, accompanied by visuals.

“This is the stuff behind the curtain — growing up on the Sunset Strip, The Comedy Store and the Playboy mansion, everything leading up to right before I made it,” Pauly, 54, says.

Pauly toured the one-man show in 2019 and early 2020, but the pandemic put it on hold. It was around that time that he decided to move to the desert, landing in DTLV a year and a half ago. “I just liked the area,” he says.

He’s become a regular at local hotspots, whether it’s dining in the Arts District, performing standup at the Downtown Grand and the Plaza Hotel and Casino, or rocking out as the frontman of The Crustys at The Sand Dollar Lounge. He started The Crustys, a tongue-in-cheek name riffing off the fact that it’s made up of aging musicians, a year ago.

“It’s just a fun thing,” he says. “We play mostly songs that I grew up with, some Nirvana, some Bob Seger — but it’s fun, always fun.”
