As we kick off our week, let’s stop to take a Mindful Minute with therapist, coach and founder of Fundamental Health, Lindsey Paoli, MFT-intern. Today she explains the importance of removing the stigmas associated with mental health and provides us with education. Here’s some eye-opening facts:
Mental Illnesses Affect Millions of Americans
Paoli says that “1 in 5 adults in America experience mental illness each year. In fact, suicide is the second leading cause of death in people ages 10 to 34. In 2019, 50.1 million adults were documented as experiencing mental illnesses including anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD and many more.”
The Numbers are Actually Much Higher Than This
1. Due to the stigma of mental health, the amount of people suffering from mental illnesses has been underreported for years.
2. This number doesn’t factor in all the millions of teens who also experience mental illnesses.
3. For 2020, the reporting of mentally illnesses hasn’t been completed and they know due to the COVID-19 pandemic impact that rates skyrocketed.
Where’s Nevada Rank in Mental Health?
Mental Health America‘s annual nationwide report, which compares prevalence of mental health and access to care, states that Nevada went from the 51st in the nation in 2018 to the 42nd in the nation in 2019. Paoli says we’re making progress, but there’s still a lot of work needed to be done to improve our state’s mental health.
