Las Vegas Golden Globe Award Ties

The HFPA has been mired in controversy since last years uncovering of shoddy ethical practices and a severe lack of diversity, but that hasn’t stopped the organization from marching on

The 79th annual Golden Globe Award nominations were announced by the scandal-ridden  (more on that later) Hollywood Foreign Press Association. But, before you go rolling your eyes at yet another award show, it’s my personal mission to give you at least one reason to be interested, it’s the only one I could find to be honest, and is the entire purpose for this article. The sole reason? This year’s crop has a whole ‘lotta Las Vegas.

Golden Takeaways

First, the big headlines from this year’s nominees from your local certified film critic. Seven is the lucky number for Netflix’s Power of the Dog  and Focus Features’ Belfast. Both films garnered that many Golden Globe nominations on the film side. And, both films are nominated in the coveted Best Picture race. On the television side HBO’s Succession, received five total nominations. The biggest being for Best Television Series Drama.

Vegas Goes Golden

There are several Las Vegas ties to the now beleaguered annual awards show.

This year the ladies are getting some attention from the Hollywood Foreign Press. And it of course starts with Lady Gaga. She earned a nomination in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) category for her work in House of Gucci

Over in the world of the smaller screen is a nomination for Hacks in the Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy category. The show, led by Jean Smart, follows aging female comedian Deborah Vance who struggles to keep her Las Vegas residency fresh and on stage. The show airs on HBO and has already gotten a season two renewal. Hacks already has three Emmy wins for their first season. We aren’t saying it’s all because of Vegas, but it certainly doesn’t hurt.

Keith Urban’s wife Nicole Kidman saw a nod for her role as Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos. She is nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) category.  Urban of course has a Las Vegas residency at the Colosseum at Caesars. His next scheduled date is May 27 where you may or may not see Nicole.

Vegas’ Golden History

While our city has a history with the award show longer than the strip itself, it’s biggest presence has been felt recently.

You may remember for the 76th Golden Globe Awards, then Las Vegas headliner Lady Gaga was basking in the glow of her Golden Globe win for Best Original Song, “Shallow” from A Star is Born. More recently at the 77th Golden Globe Awards it was former Vegas headliner Elton John who took home the same prize and whose biopic Rocketman earned its lead actor, Taron Eggerton, a Golden Globe for Best Performance in a Musical or Comedy.

A Not So golden Scandal

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been mired in controversy with a capital ‘c’ for the better part of a year. This was after an article from the Los Angeles Times revealed the organization not only used shady ethical practices but also had an extreme lack of diversity amongst its members (most notable that a single member in the organization was black).

The blowback from the scandal caused NBC to cancel their 2022 airing and had the top studios vowing to not work with the group until major reforms had been put in place. That practice continues today. Though the nominations were announced, few studios and even fewer actors/actresses posted news of their respective nominations on social media. In other words, crickets. Perhaps it’s true, silence does speak louder than words. In this case, you could even say, silence is golden.

Winners will be announced on Sunday, January 9. However, an exact format on how the winners will be named  has yet to be announced. See the full list of 2022 Golden Globe nominations below.
