The multifaceted artist earned a BFA from NYU’s Tisch School of Arts. Plus she studied writing at Harvard University, Sarah Lawrence College and an Asian American Writer’s Workshop.

Since 2017, she’s been a member of the Dorset Theater Festival’s Women Artists Writing Group (DTFWAW)– a group of mid-career women’s writing voices and non-binary theater performers. Newhard presented her hybrid operetta, Queen of the Nile, as part of HERE Arts Center’s livestream series #STILLHERE in July 2020. Prior to her current residency, she also debuted her first production, Assembled Identity (a collaboration with Kristin Marting and Pruva Bedi), at HERE Arts Center in Spring 2018.

Queen of the Nile was part of her 2017 Artist Residency program with the Drama League of New York and she received support from DTFWAW, NACL’s Deep Space Performance Residence program and Drop Forge and Tool. Other organizations that also helped support that project include Disha Theatre, Mental Insight Foundation, Axe-Houghton Foundation and Puffin Foundation.

And she also created two plays with DTFWAW, Andromache at the End of the World and Zenith.

During the summer and winter of 2018, she was an invited artist in Drop Forge & Tool Z’s Forge workshops.

Newhard’s credentials include film, commercial and theatre experience from a wide variety of art and styles. Her artist journey has led her here to Las Vegas where she will connect and enrich the Las Vegas art scene.

Artist Talk Collaborations

Mariana Newhard’s Artist Talk dives into the development and emergence of her Queen of the Nile hybrid operetta. With a background in hybrid collaborative theatre, she explains how that plays a crucial role in the way she approached developing this piece. Two of the collaborators on this project, Dina Emerson and Michelle Bossy, also will share their experiences while making this hybrid theatre piece. Both of them will especially elaborate on their involvement in the work’s music and direction in this operetta. This event will also feature samples of the vocal techniques and music devices they applied to create it. Guests will listen to how the artists explored the theme of women’s sexualization in the media and in history.

Additional information about the following Culminating Performance has yet to be announced.

Rogers Studio Gallery is located downtown at 620 S. 7th Street.
